Assassination Classroom is about a yellow octopus alien thing that has invaded the planet. Most weapons are impervious to it, it can move at Mach 20, and he threatens to blow up the Earth in one year. In the meantime, he makes a bizarre request: he wants to teach a middle school class. The government obliges and gives the students a task: kill this thing before the year ends and they'll get 10 billion yen.
What makes this challenging isn't the fact that the octopus is a near-indestructible super fast regenerative beast. It's challenging because he's the best teacher you could ever ask for. He takes time to help each kid pass their exams. It's a show that teaches you that being in last place doesn't mean you suck, and it's a show that I have a deep connection with since I was having school troubles myself when I watched this. Both an engaging action series as well as a scathing critique of Japan's educational system, Assassination Classroom is one of my all-time favorite anime.

Assassination Classroom is a prodigious rollercoaster of a series, and to me, represents everything excellent about Japanese Animation. It can take you from rolling on the floor laughing to a sobbing, sad mess over the course of a couple of episodes. Heck, even over a few MINUTES, you can run a gamut of emotions. By the end of the series, while you might not remember individual names, you will come to care for each of these characters as though you knew them personally—not an easy feat for a show with such a large cast.
In my eyes, Assassination Classroom succeeds in so many excellent ways. Still, at its core, it’s a story about the underdogs rising together, working together, and accomplishing their goal while sticking it to the establishment that mistreats them for no reason other than “tradition”. It’s about how you sometimes have to fight for the respect you are due, and also fight to maintain the respect you have earned.
