Of all the anime on this site, Attack on Titan is the one that needs no introduction. To this day it remains one of the most popular anime of all time. But in case the day comes where it's no longer a juggernaut in the community, let's continue.
100 years ago, giant humanoid creatures called Titans appeared and wiped out nearly all of humanity. What remains of humanity resides in one area closed off by three walls. One day, at the beginning of the series, a Colossal Titan towering 60 meters/200 feet with no skin appears and breaks down the first wall. The protagonist, Eren Yeager, witnesses as the titans upend his entire life in just a couple hours. He vows to destroy every last titan, so he and his best friends join the military in an effort to take them all down.
Over the course of multiple seasons, Attack on Titan develops into a sprawling epic with several twists and turns along the way. A major twist happens early on that asks a multitude of questions as the series reveals the answers in due time. The series is far from perfect, the middle seasons lost me, but it's all worth it for the fantastic final arc.
Attack on Titan is one of the first anime I ever watched, and it remains a great starting point for any newcomers to anime.

*After episode 87, two hour-long specials were made to adapt the remaining chapters of the manga. Later broadcasts in Japan divided these specials into 7 episodes, technically making the length 94 episodes. But these versions have not been released internationally, so we're gonna say the series is 89 total episodes.
