Hiroyuki Imaishi along with other artists who grew up watching super robot anime, made a love letter to the genre that spoke to an even wider audience than many of those shows did and it became a modern classic.
Humanity has been trapped living underground in squalor but two young men: Simon and Kamina dream of breaking to the surface. When a Beast Man from the surface crashes down into their cave, they meet Yoko, a girl from another pit and discover a world entirely hostile to humans. Luckily for them Simon is able to operate a robot created by the Beast Men, which gives them a fighting chance to do what everyone else deemed impossible. As their journey continues, they meet many more allies and challenge the nature of the world. They succeed but it comes at a terrible cost which leads them to challenge the universe itself.
Gurren Lagann is an incredible ride with stunning visuals for pulse-pounding action sequences that reach a ridiculous scale, and it has plenty of humor, heart-stopping, and heart breaking moments. To me there is no other story that encapsulates the resilience of the human spirit quite like it does.
