Gon Freecss set out on a journey to become a hunter like his dead-beat father before him. First he must complete the exam to get his hunter’s license. Throughout the test he encounters other would-be hunters who build a strong bond with him, no more so than Killua, a young assassin who becomes his best friend. After becoming hunters their goals shift to learning greater skills to take on higher ranked missions and finding Gon’s good for nothing father. That will take them all over the world and even to a secluded island where monstrous creatures are taking over.

Yoshiro Togashi crafts the most well-rounded shounen epics. While Yu Yu Hakusho is a master class in shounen, I dare say that Hunter x Hunter is even better. The unfortunate reality is the story remains unfinished but thankfully the 2011 anime adaptation has a fairly satisfying conclusion. It easily rivals Yu Yu Hakusho and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood for the best and most consistent anime adaptations of a shounen manga.
