One of the founding grandmothers of the “Cute Girls Doing Cute Things” genre, Lucky Star has earned its spot on this list for being one of the most quirky yet ordinary shows of the last 20 years. What makes it so special is that it excels at depicting the average, everyday conversations and situations we’ve all come across at least once. Who hasn’t had those funny, non-sequitur conversations about how to eat certain foods or how silly and uncool their parents are? Heaven knows I have, and that shows just how relatable and charming this show is. If a 40-year-old Black man can relate to the goings on of a group of high school girls, you’ve really got something special! While Lucky Star does start slow, resting on its short comic strip laurels, later episodes introduce more cohesive narratives while staying true to what makes the show awesome. In addition, Lucky Star is a celebration of geek culture through Konata Izumi. Her love of anime, manga, video games, and conventions is both hilarious to watch and at the same time endearing. She is an UNASHAMED otaku, while still maintaining a social life and decent grades…something many otaku in the real world should really aspire for. Just saying.
