In his quest to become the next King of the Pirates, Monkey D. Luffy goes from island to island assembling a crew while looking for adventure, some delicious food and a good fight. As a boy he ate a devil fruit which allows his body to act like rubber and seemingly the only limit to that power is his own imagination. As the Strawhat crew journey from sea to sea they encounter all manner of friend and foe and eventually cross hairs with the forces governing the world becoming infamous pirates rivaling the other emperors of the sea as they search for the legendary treasure, the One Piece.
One Piece is definitely formulaic in structure but Eiichiro Oda's ability to create unique and detailed islands for his characters to visit is simply unmatched. The world building is phenomenal and so are the characters. With 1,000+ episodes and at least a few hundred more to go the pacing is an obvious barrier but I could watch the Straw Hats hang out forever and never get enough of them. One Piece is my favorite work of fiction, period. There are long stretches where the anime production is unfortunately sub-par but in recent years the animators at Toei have been putting out incredible work, worthy of the source material.
