This is one of those shows that makes me drop to my knees and thank God that I was born when I was, so I can properly enjoy this amazing anime. Long before Cowboy Bebop entered my life, Outlaw Star was my taste of Space Action adventure anime. Outlaw Star was the introduction to non-Star Trek Space. That is, everything is a little grungy and worn out, Starship Captains aren’t larger-than-life personalities like Captain Kirk, and people are still chasing that almighty dollar—sorry, Wong. Our main crew exemplifies what it means to be a Found Family: they are genuinely a mashup of misfits, yet somehow manage to work together to survive another day. And do we need to talk about that OP? “Through the Night” is one of the most LEGENDARY anime OPs of all time. I’ve spent many a late night coming home from work with the sunroof open, windows down, and Arimachi Masahiko’s lyrics blasting in the Louisiana night.
