Steins;Gate is my favorite anime of all time. I've known this since I first watched it nearly a decade ago. And I've always had trouble explaining why. I think most of us don't have any super specific reason for why something is our #1 favorite. We just know it is.
Steins;Gate is about Rintaro Okabe, a college student that turns a microwave into a time machine. Here's how it works: by connecting his phone to the microwave, he's able to send a text message to the past. If that message alters the course of history, then Rintaro Okabe's memories alter to the resulting timeline. That's the short version.
Every character rules. The music is iconic. And Hiroshi Hamasaki's directing helps put you on the edge of your seat, especially during the second half. Visual novels are notoriously hard to adapt into anime, but Steins;Gate is the only one that everyone agrees was done right. Aside from a couple noticably aged aspects, I can't think of anything bad to say about Steins;Gate.
