Releasing one episode a week is better than releasing it all at once. Full season drops are overwhelming to those who can't watch every episode in a weekend, on top of making discussions hard because some have only seen two episodes while others have seen six episodes and others have finished it. Weekly drops make catching up with shows and sparking conversations a lot more manageable.
But it didn't stop Devilman: Crybaby from dominating the conversation for an entire year.
Jury's out if it stood the test of time, but Devilman: Crybaby is the kind of breakout smash hit that everyone dreams of. Masaaki Yuasa had been a respected auteur in anime fandom but this made him, his new studio Science Saru and I'll even argue Kensuke Ushio all household names among anime fans. It takes full advantage of its place on Netflix to go all-in on sex and violence. The only other anime I've seen that uses sex to drive its narrative (rather than shameless fanservice) is Yuasa's own Kemonozume, another great show by the way.
Is it the definitive adaptation of Go Nagai's Devilman? Hard to say but probably not. As an alternate take on the series it's amazing, and one that Go Nagai himself is proud of. But it's way too different to be considered a true adaptation. But that won't stop me from telling you to see it.
